Social Validation
You heard a good song.
You instantly share it with your friend.
You watched an award-winning movie.
You became a salesman for that as if you directed it.
You achieved something.
You post it on your social feed for everyone to see.
In all the above scenarios, what we are essentially doing is seeking social validation for our music taste, movie choices, and even for our very own achievements. But is it how this is supposed to be? One line of argument can be, since these are pretty much our personal preferences, their impact on our lives should be the same whether we choose to share them or not. But as it turns out, it feels good when others like the same songs/movies as we do. But why is it so? I think that has something to do with our evolution. We evolved so fast at a collective level that we still feel very insecure about our social position at an individual level. This insecurity urges us to seek validation so that we can feel secure about our choices/achievements.
So, if a Lion were to listen to “Don’t Matter Now,” he is more likely to enjoy it himself than sharing it with others cause he is secure about his position, or maybe because he doesn’t have WhatsApp? XD. Not to mention that I already shared a song with you! :3
Cheers!
